TIKTIK : The Aswang Chronicles Movie Review

TIKTIK : The Aswang Chronicles
If you haven't seen this movie yet, better check it out soon or you'll be missing a proudly Filipino made movie. Don't wait for it on the small tube, you've got to see it on the big screen to fully enjoy the level of maturity that this film boasts of . Watching the movie during the 10pm last full show at Lucky Chinatown Mall added more to that chilly vibe we got from this movie, aside from the very cold temperature inside, the atmosphere is very intimate giving that kind of eerie feel.

It's one helluva ride from the opening credits until the last scene and if I'll have to sum it up in one Filipino word, I'd say it's "ASTIG" (kick-ass)!!! The movie soundtrack provided by our own rock icons like Mike Hanapol and Wolfgang added more to that kick-ass feel.

“Ang Pelikulang May Puso, Atay, Bituka, at Iba Pang Lamang Loob...” goes the tagline of this movie that has been rated PG by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. Tiktik: the Aswang Chronicles is Graded B by the Cinema Evaluation Board.

TIKTIK : The Aswang Chronicles successfully blended  Pinoy humor, Filipino folklore and stunning visuals aiming to be at par with Hollywood standards. Think of the movie 300's visual effects and the gore and suspense of the hit series Walking Dead, Tiktik succeeded in giving us both those thrills plus laughing moments that are highly entertaining.

Dingdong Dantes, who played the lead role, "Makoy" is in his best element in this film. His brusque and happy go lucky character fits him to a tee.  Lovi Poe, who played as her love interest, "Sonia" is convincing and engaging as well. The trio of Joey Marquez and Janice de Belen as Lovi's parents and Ramon Bautista managed to bring in the comic relief much to our enjoyment. The human "aswangs" played by Mike Gayoso, Roi Vinzon, LJ Reyes and the rest of the pack did a good job of instilling fear and horror to our sensibilities. Its not perfect though, there's more to be desired when they transformed and turned into CGI aswangs. I think it would have been best had they stick with the human form and just made them look more fierce and terrifying. But overall this film is truly an innovation, showcasing the talents of  Pinoy artistry, and proving that our film makers are now treating moviegoers more seriously.

Written and directed by Eric Matti, Tiktik is one solid Pinoy entertainment we can be proud of.

My rating : 4/5

Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo

It's actually just very near my place, pretty near but it took me a while before checking it out. It's in Binondo, a few blocks away from the most frequented bargain haven, 168 mall.  Normally, I dont go past 168 for my bargain hunts but today I decided to check Lucky Chinatown Mall first before doing my usual bargain hunting round at 168.

Well it's certainly a breath of fresh air having a luxury mall  in this area. I'm not sure though if it's a good idea to put up a high end mall in the midst of a bargain district but its definitely a welcome and refreshing sight and the convenience it brings if I need to look for something original and branded, or eat in a fine dining resto or watch a movie or go to a salon, this is my best option than go to upscale malls in Makati where I need to spend more on transpo and consume more time braving heavy traffic. Think of Store Specialists and Suyen Corp as tenants and you'll get the idea of the upscale brands that they carry. I probably wont see Forever 21 but there's Cotton On :).

Another come on is their 100 peso charge for watching a movie. I'm not sure if its only for now but I'll definitely take advantage of this offer while it lasts. I do hope they can maintain the cleanliness and freshness of the four cinemas.

Big Daddy's Chicken
Their food court is not as big as I expected although there are many fine dining restaurants inside but sometimes you just need some quick bites and a lot of choices. I was looking for something to try and my smell brought me to this kiosk, I felt transported to Taiwan, yeah I miss Taipei and their street food. Well, I should have just picked "Just the Chop" for a quick bite but instead decided to sit down so I took this one Chicken Chop + Japanese Curry + Rice which didn't quite sit well with my taste buds and I think 145 pesos is a bit overpriced. It filled me but I wasn't happy as it didn't meet the taste I was craving for.

You might want to check Lucky Chinatown Mall  if you go bargain hunting in Divisoria, but don't go on a weekend if possible, holiday season buying just started there and its getting crowded now but you'll be surprised to see that the famous bargain district is starting to get a facelift and new establishments are sprouting from left to right and I bet you'll like it.
